The Governing Body

The overall brief for a Governing Body is to provide a strategic view, ensure accountability and act as a ‘critical friend’. Governors have increasing responsibilities that result in making crucial decisions about the school. They are involved in all aspects of the school’s development, and monitor and evaluate progress. A Governing Body both supports and challenges the school.

The core responsibilities involved are:

  • Ensuring accountability
  • Acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the Head Teacher
  • Monitoring and evaluating the school’s progress
  • Budgetary allocation and control
  • Planning for the long term future of the school
  • Setting the school’s aims and values
  • Appointing senior members of staff including the Head Teacher

The Governors meet as a whole group and, in addition, most Governors sit on one or more of the Committees. West Green has two Committees which fulfil specific roles including:

Business & Resources committee;

  • Setting and monitoring the annual budget;
  • Ensuring best use of available resources;
  • Overseeing staffing issues.

Teaching & Learning committee;

  • Writing and reviewing all curriculum-related policies;
  • Monitoring key focus areas in the School Development Plan;
  • Monitoring teaching and assessment strategies.

The Governing Body and school staff have a responsibility to avoid any conflict between business and personal interests and the interests of the school. To help put this duty into practice and to meet legal requirements, all maintained schools maintain a register of interests. The register will ensure that governors’ and Associate Members personal interests do not unfairly prejudice, influence or conflict with school’s decision making processes.
