Y2 Writing Task: Instructions for beach safety

Have you seen my video message from the end of last week? Please watch it in this blog post:

Y2 Merits! How many have you won?

Command, Question or Statement?

1. When did you buy your television?

2. Go to the shops and buy me some milk.

3. It costs a lot of money to buy a house.

4. You must be careful at the skate park!

5. Being careful at the skate park will help you to be safe.

6. Were you careful at the skate park?

Put your answers in the comments and give Mr Morgan a command. Remember I am recovering from surgery so please don’t command me to do anything that will tire me out!

Those of you doing PURPLE MASH every week will remember the RNLI is a charity who work on the British and Irish coastline, as well as on some rivers, to save lives when people get into trouble on the water.

One of the best ways to save lives is to teach people how to stay safe before they enter the water. This means they can prevent people getting into trouble.

Your Writing Task

Write at least five sentences instructing people how to stay safe when they visit beaches. Use a piece of lined paper and handwrite the sentences, sending them to westgreen.yellowclass@gmail.com to win your merit.

Your sentences will need to be commands. Here are some sentence starters that will help you write five commands.

You must…

You have to…

Be careful when…

Or you can use a bossy verb (imperative verb) at the beginning of your sentence. This BBC Bitesize lesson will show you how.

**Don’t forget to write down important beach rules to do with what the different flags mean, and also don’t forget to write a special rule for this year about social distancing!**

Scroll back to the top of the lesson and tell me what type of sentences 1-6 are. Then give me a command of your own!

    Have a bath.
Never dropping litter is good for the environment.
Can you eat a fruit today?
    Do your work.
    Look after the environment.

    • Mr Morgan says:

You are correct with the sentences, 6 out of 6. However, in your own sentences, I asked only for commands.

      Have a bath. – command
Never dropping litter is good for the environment – statement
Can you eat a fruit today? – question
      Do your work. – command
Look after the environment. – command

Can you change your 2nd and 3rd sentences so that they are commands?

  • Mr Morgan says:

I’ve just emailed Aaron some feedback for his sentences. I want everyone to think about this. Try and hit REPLY to this message and type a new sentence.

You must go between the black and white flags if you are surfing.

This is an important sentence that helps people understand what the flags mean. Can you write a sentence for a different coloured flag?

    • Vihansa says:

You should not go in to the water to swim or bathe if there is a Red flag.

      • Mr Morgan says:

That’s a great sentence! I love the verb bathe. The word ‘red’ doesn’t need a capital letter, even though it is the name of the flag. Can somebody else write a different one about a different flag?

        • Vihansa says:

If orange windsock displays it tells off shore wind conditions. You should never use an inflatable when the sock is flying.

          • Mr Morgan says:

It is rare to see the orange windsock but very important to know what to do if you see one! Most of the time if it is too windy the lifeguards will just close the beach by using the red flag.

    • Hi.
      Good Morning Mr Morgan.

      Danger! Red Flag.
Do not enter the water when you see this flag!
