Y2 Science: Do humans get faster as they get older?

Watch this video. Can anyone recognise Usain Bolt? He appeared on our timeline when we were learning about significant people! He was the fastest man in the world.

Now Usain is a little bit older and he doesn’t race anymore.

Q1:Do you think he is still the fastest man in the world?

Q2: Do you think he will be the fastest man in the world in thirty years?

The 10 funniest Usain Bolt memes from his 100-meter dash in Rio ...

Now watch another video. Can a child beat Usain Bolt in a running race?

Q3: If Usain Bolt was trying his best, do you think he would’ve won the race against the child?

Q4: Why would the Year 4 child in this video be faster than a child in Year 1?

Your experiment

The Push Up Challenge - YouTube

I want you to ask someone who is bigger and stronger than you to take part in a challenge. Tell them they have to try their best. How many push ups you and your challenger can do in one minute (60 seconds)? Who can do the most?

I’m expecting you to lose the challenge. That’s because most younger children have smaller muscles than older children and adults. In a running race, they also have shorter legs. This means that they run slower.

Bonus Question – When you finished your challenge, how did your body feel different?

Was your face a different colour?

What happened to your heart?

How did your muscles feel?

Tell me in the comments – thinking about those differences, do you think exercise is healthy?

Please also look back at old blog posts in case you’ve missed any work!

    • Adrien Schellingerhoud says:

Do you think I could do more than 34 in one minute?

Do you think an old woman could do more than 34 in one minute? Why would the old woman find it difficult?

    • Mr Morgan says:

Exercise is indeed healthy, but how does it make us more healthy? What is getting stronger when we exercise?

  • nariyah says:

I won the challange and done 15 push ups against my uncle Josh who done only 4. After the exercise my arms felt weak and my heart was beating extremely

    • Miss Essor says:

Wow Nariyah that’s a lot of pushups!

Do you think if you kept doing pushups you would get stronger or weaker?

    • Mr Morgan says:

I think your uncle Josh needs to work out Nariyah!

So you can do 15 push ups now. How many do you think you will be able to do when you are 17? How many do you think you will do when you are 77?

Will your body always get stronger? Answer Ms Essor’s question too, there’s another merit if you can reply!

  • kianosh says:

I don’t think so because he got older and he is not the fastest in the world
next answer .I don’t think so
    next answer yes

next answer who can do it more kianosh
next answer my body was tired
next answer my face was different it was red
next answer my heart was beating
next answer my muscles were tired
    next answer exercise is healthy

    • Miss Essor says:

      Wow Kianosh!

You said your body felt tired after pushups.

Do you think it is important to relax and cool down after excerise? Why/why not?

      Miss Essor

    • Mr Morgan says:

Well done Kianosh! The more your heart beats, the faster it is pumping blood around your body. Exercise makes your heart beat stronger. If your heart is strong, you will be very fit and you won’t get as tired!

  • kianosh says:

I push up and down 50

  • Nala says:

For the push up challenge I was up against my big brother rico I got 15 and he got 17. My face was red and wet. My heart was beating really fast and my arms hurt.

Exercise is very good for our bodies. Maintaining a good and healthy lifestyle is good for our heart.

    • Miss Essor says:

      Wow Nala that’s great!
Why do you think your big brother could do more pushups then you?

      Miss Essor

    • Mr Morgan says:

Nice work Nala, if we exercise our heart will get stronger and it will do its job of pumping blood around our bodies better.

Try to answer Ms Essor’s question and also think about the reason you were sweating. Why do we sweat?

  • Nala says:

    1. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh has a castle, Crown Jewels and Carlton hill is topped with monuments and memorials

    2. Cardiff is the capital of Wales, cardiff has a hockey team who is called Cardiff Devils

    3. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, population 341,877 that was by 2018.

    • Mr Morgan says:

You can have a merit for these facts too! Edinburgh is a lovely city with lots of old buildings and monuments. Have a look at some photos online!

Oh and next time, try to post this comment for the correct lesson! 😛

  • Safiyyah says:

    I did 18 push-ups and my dad did 20.

Was your face a different colour? = little bit red

What happened to your heart? = It beats faster.

How did your muscles feel? =tired and aching

Exercise is healthy for your body because blood pumps around the whole body.

    • Mr Morgan says:

Well done Dad for winning! However, if you do the same experiment in twenty years time, do you think your Dad would still win?

  • Vihansa says:

    1. Yes, Still he is the fastest man in the world.
    2. No.
    3. Yes.
    4. Because, the child in year 4 is little older and stronger than the year 1 child.

    • Mr Morgan says:

Try to answer in more detail Vihansa. For question 2, why will Usain Bolt slow down?

For question 3, why would Usain Bolt have won the race against the child if he was trying? Explain with because.

Challenge – Do not use the word ‘older’ in either of your longer answers!
