Y2 Maths: The 2 hour challenge

Petition update · Old American Adventure Theme Park Map · Change.org

Look at this theme park! Theme parks were one of the businesses that were allowed to reopen by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, from Saturday 4th July.

Of course, it is still important that if you choose to visit a theme park, that you make sure you are social distancing.

Today, Mr Morgan wants you to plan your trip to the theme park you can see in the map. However, you only have two hours to explore the theme park, which means you can’t do everything!

You need to choose what activities you will do inside the time limit. Look carefully at the table below. It will tell you how long each ride takes.

Comments Challenge

Obviously, to be successful in this challenge, you need to know how many minutes is equal to two hours.

If I know 1 hour = 60 minutes, then I know 2 hours = 60 + 60 minutes.

If I know 6 + 6 = 12, then I know 60 + 60 = _____

So 2 hours is equal to 120 minutes.

In the comments, complete these extra conversion questions. Questions 1-4 are mild. Questions 5-8 are spicy, only try these if you dare.

  1. If I know 60 + 60 + 60 = 180, then I know 180 minutes = ___ hours
  2. If I know 1 week = 7 days, then I know 10 weeks = ____ days
  3. If I know July and August both have 31 days, then altogether July and August has ____ days
  4. If I know there are 24 hours in 1 day, then I know there are ____ hours in half a day.
  5. If I know there are 60 seconds in 1 minute, then I know there are ____ seconds in 5 minutes.
  6. If I know a Formula 1 car can do a lap in 90 seconds, then I know after 6 minutes it can do ____ laps.
  7. How many hours are in a week?
  8. It is now 113 days since Mr Morgan taught his last lesson at West Green. About how many weeks ago was this?

Well done to both of you. Some of those spicy questions are really very hard! I would expect most children to only try questions 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Thank you to Aaron for emailing me your 2 hour plan. He has chosen to start with The Missile, which takes 30 minutes. I wonder if anyone else will start with the same rollercoaster?

I made those questions very difficult on purpose, to really challenge you! Remember, it’s ok to find things difficult. Try and try and try again. If you keep trying, one day you’ll be successful and it will feel amazing.
