Y2 Maths: 3D shapes and patterns

LO: To identify the properties of 3D shapes!

1 SC: I can count all of the faces.

2 SC: I can count all of the vertices.

3 SC: I can count all of the edges.

Please watch the video below to learn about these properties. You might want to watch it twice, or even a third time after you’ve completed the worksheet to check!

Now complete the worksheet, which you can copy and paste into a word document if you want to print, or you can just write the answers down on a new piece of paper. Treat it like the talk task and don’t peak at the answers straight away! The answers are on Page 2, press the down arrow at the bottom left corner of the sheet to see them.

Patterns! Watch this video and see if you can spot any patterns.

Now we’ll see if you can combine your knowledge of 3D shapes and patterns to complete the patterns below. If you are able to print both pages, then you can use the second page to cut and stick. Remember to send any work to my new email address!

In the comments, answer these three questions.

1. How many faces would there be on two cubes?

2. How many edges would there be on five cylinders?

3. How many vertices would there be on eight spheres?

    This was soo easy!???

    • Mr Morgan says:

      Challenge questions then!

Q4) How many faces are there in 3 square based pyramids and 3 cones?

Q5) In my cupboard there are four cereal boxes. How many edges are there in total on the cereal boxes?

        Hi Mr Morgan,
        Q4) 21
        Q5)32

        • Mr Morgan says:

Well done for having a go Safiyyah and Melina.

          Question 4 is 21. There are 5 faces on a square based pyramid, and 3×5 = 15. There are 2 faces on a cone, and 3×2 = 6. Therefore 15 + 6 = 21

          Question 5 is 48. A cereal box is a cuboid and a cuboid has 12 edges. 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 48.

Melina, your answer would be correct if the question was about vertices. There are 32 vertices in 4 cereal boxes.

  • Hi Mr Morgan.

    12 Faces

    2. How many edges would there be on five cylinders?

  • Mr Morgan says:

Well done Melina, Aaron and Saule. Not one of you have been tricked by my trick question about the spheres!

Some of you are just too clever.

  • Safiyyah says:

    1. How many faces would there be on two cubes? = 12

    2. How many edges would there be on five cylinders? = 10

    3. How many vertices would there be on eight spheres? = 0

Well done Nariyah and everybody else who answered correctly above this message. You’ve all won a merit for commenting on this post. Can you make a sentence in Ms Essor’s sentence game now?
