Last week I asked you to do some addition using the column method. This week I want you to focus only on taking away.
Some of you may have done your MyMaths task already. If you didn’t score above 70%, remember you need to do it again if you want to win two merits. Watch my video and then try your MyMaths again, or try the activities below the video.

It’s very important you practise the column method for subtraction, as it takes some getting used to. Here are some more questions you can complete. Send your answers to westgreen.yellowclass@gmail.com to win another merit.
The first page does not include any regrouping, so I’m sure even my Maths Group can have a go at it without too much trouble! Just remember to use columns. Please go to Page 3 for the regrouping problems (on the sheet regrouping is called ‘exchanging’).

Look at my tower from the beginning of the video.
If the tower was 1 bottle high, there would be 1 bottle.
If the tower was 2 bottles high, there would be 3 bottles.
If the tower was 3 bottles high, there would be 6 bottles.
If the tower was 4 bottles high, there would be 10 bottles.
If the tower was 5 bottles high…
If the tower was 6 bottles high…
In the comments, keep going as far as you can go with this pattern. What pattern can you see? Explain it.

What about 7 bottles high? Then 8 bottles high? You could keep adding and you could use the column method to add!
Super Question: How many rows of bottles could you make with 100 bottles?
If there was 7 bottles there would be 28 bottles.
If there was 8 bottles there would be 35 bottles.
If there was 9 bottles there would be 42 bottles.
If there was 10 bottles there would be 49 bottles.
You are correct with 7 bottles.
However you are incorrect with 8 bottles. This is because you keep adding the number 7, and that is not the rule needed to work out 8 bottles.
Therefore 9 bottles and 10 bottles are incorrect as well. Great effort though!

14 bottles high = 105 bottles.

Very good Aaron. However if I have 100 bottles, the answer to my super question must be 13 rows. As I wouldn’t be able to make all of my fourteenth row!

When it comes to the 15th row, you have to add 15 to the total number of bottles in the 14th row so on…

Well done. These were easier because there was no regrouping, but it still takes great maths to get them all correct!
Click on the down arrow on the sheet and find page three. These questions need regrouping and are a little bit difficult. Maybe Daryosh will help you!
