Maths challenge for Year 5 & 6!

Hello there!

Well done to Allana, Victoria and Adrian for getting the last one correct. It was difficult and what we really liked seeing was that, even when you got it wrong the first few times, you persisted and kept going until you got the correct answer.

EDIT: it appears that I missed Allana’s name before. I am very sorry and well done to the three of you again! Patrick

This week you be doing the square addition challenge. Let me show you an example.

This is how the square will look like at the beginning:

You have to fill in the empty boxes so that each side adds up to the number in the middle (12). However you can only use numbers 1-8 and you can not repeat any numbers. We did the first one for you:

I have added arrows so you can see that each side adds up to 12. Notice how the numbers go from 1 to 8.

3 + 7 + 2 = 12

3 + 8 + 1 = 12

1 + 5 + 6 = 12

6 + 4 + 2 = 12

We had to have lots of attempts in order to get it right so you might have to have a good few as well. Don’t give up!

You will have to use the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 to do the same with the following squares:

All the sides will have to add to 13

All the sides will have to add to 14

All the sides will have to add to 15

I have attached a document below in which you can fill in the gaps on your computer rather than drawing each one.

Good luck,

Do you understand what you have to do? I’m worried that we may not have explained it well enough though I think the example should do it.
The best way to do this is trial and error- keep trying different ways and if it doesn’t work- try again!

Patrick,I tried to use your word document that you made to help me but for some reason,it just wouldn’t let me type.I tried touching all of those buttons on the top of the screen but all I saw that everything that was there after I touched all those buttons (not the screen)was frozen. Will you please try to help?

Ask you parents to make sure it is not ‘read-only’ and then it should be fine. Then you can fill it in and send it back to me.

    Mine is right here.

    3+8+2=13
    2+4+7=13
    7+5+1=13
    1+9+3=13
    9+4=13

That was my strategy.I hope it’s a winning one!

You can not use 9 remember as it is 1-8. Try to do it on the sheet so it is easier to see. Or write it down and take a picture.
      Good try though!
